Lemoiz (which is Lemóniz in Spanish) is a small town and municipality in northern Spain. It is located in the province of Biscay, which is part of the Basque Country. Around 1,243 people live in Lemoiz.

About Lemoiz

Lemoiz is a quiet place known for its beautiful coastal views. It has a small fishing port called Armintza. The town is surrounded by green hills and the Bay of Biscay.

The Unfinished Power Plant

Lemoiz is famous for something that was never finished: a large power plant. This plant was meant to be a nuclear power plant. Nuclear power plants use special fuel to create a lot of electricity.

Why Was It Built?

The idea for the Lemoiz Nuclear Power Plant started in the 1970s. Spain needed more ways to make electricity. Nuclear power was seen as a good option. It could produce a lot of energy without burning fossil fuels. The location in Lemoiz was chosen because it was near the coast. This was important for cooling the plant.

Why Was It Stopped?

The construction of the power plant began, but it faced many problems.

  • Environmental Concerns: Many people, called ecologists, were worried. They feared the plant could harm the environment. They also worried about the safety of nuclear energy.
  • Safety Issues: A group called ETA caused serious safety concerns and disruptions. These actions made it very difficult to continue building the plant.

Because of these strong protests and safety worries, the construction stopped. The plant was never completed. Today, the large, unfinished buildings still stand as a reminder of this project.
