Lenny Abrahamson (born 30 November 1966) is a talented Irish film and television director. He is well-known for directing independent movies like Adam & Paul (2004), Garage (2007), What Richard Did (2012), Frank (2014), and Room (2015). These films helped him win six Irish Film and Television Awards.
In 2015, he became widely recognized for directing Room. This movie was based on the book of the same name by Emma Donoghue. Room received four nominations at the 88th Academy Awards. These included nominations for Best Picture and Best Director for Abrahamson. In 2020, he directed six episodes of the TV series Normal People. He also helped produce it. For this work, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.

Early Life and Education
Lenny Abrahamson was born in Rathfarnham, Dublin, Ireland. His parents were Edna and Max Abrahamson, who was a lawyer. He went to The High School and then to Trinity College Dublin. At Trinity College, he first studied theoretical physics. After a year, he changed to philosophy and became a scholar in 1988.
Lenny Abrahamson's Career in Film
Lenny Abrahamson was offered a special scholarship to study for a PhD in Philosophy. This was at Stanford University in the United States. However, after six months, he decided to leave his studies. He returned to Ireland to start making films.
He began his career by directing commercials. He made a popular series of advertisements for Carlsberg.
First Films and TV Shows
His first film was Adam & Paul (2004). It was a dark comedy about two friends facing challenges in Dublin. His next film was Garage (2007). This movie starred Pat Shortt as a lonely gas station worker in rural Ireland. Both Adam & Paul and Garage won the IFTA award for best film.
In 2007, the TV channel RTÉ showed Abrahamson's four-part TV mini-series called Prosperity. He wrote this series with Mark O'Halloran. The show focused on people in difficult situations in Irish society. Each episode was about a different character. Prosperity was nominated for six Irish Film and Television Awards in 2008. It won two awards: Best Directing for Lenny Abrahamson and Best Script for Mark O'Halloran.
In 2012, Abrahamson won his third IFTA for best film with What Richard Did.
Directing Frank and Room
Lenny Abrahamson also directed a film called Frank. This movie is set in Britain, Ireland, and the USA. It's a comedy about a young musician who joins a unique band. The band is led by a mysterious singer named Frank. The film stars Michael Fassbender and Domhnall Gleeson. Frank was shown for the first time at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2014. The movie is about an unusual musician inspired by a real-life character.
After Frank, he directed the movie version of Emma Donoghue's novel, Room (2015). For this film, he received his first Academy Award nomination. The movie was very successful with both critics and audiences.
Future Projects
In 2014, it was announced that Abrahamson would direct a movie based on Laird Hunt's Civil War novel Neverhome. He was also working on a film called A Man's World. This movie is based on the boxing story of Emile Griffith and Benny Paret.
In 2016, it was confirmed that Abrahamson would direct a film based on Neal Bascomb's book The Grand Escape. This is a true story about three brave World War I pilots. They were held in Germany's most famous prison camp. The story tells about the biggest mass prison escape of WWI. It also follows the pilots' journey to freedom.

Lenny Abrahamson is married to Monika Pamula. She is a film studies teacher from Poland. They have two children together.
