Leo de Berardinis (born January 3, 1940 – died September 18, 2008) was a famous Italian actor and director for the stage. He was a very important person in Italian avant-garde theatre. This means he explored new and experimental ways of performing and creating plays.
Life and Theatre Work
Leo de Berardinis was born in Gioi, a small village in southern Italy. He grew up in the city of Foggia.
He started his acting career with a theatre group led by Carlo Quartucci. Later, he began working closely with Perla Peragallo. In 1968, he helped create the play Don Quixote with Carmelo Bene.
In the 1970s, Leo and Perla moved to Marigliano, near Naples. There, they created many plays using "improvisational theatre." This style of theatre often involves actors making up parts of the play as they perform, rather than following a strict script.
In 1983, Leo worked with a group called Cooperativa Nuova Scena in Bologna. He directed several plays by the famous writer William Shakespeare. These included well-known works like Hamlet, King Lear, and The Tempest.
In 1987, Leo de Berardinis started his own theatre company called "Teatro di Leo." This name means "Leo's Theatre." His company created new shows, held workshops, and organized meetings about theatre.
Later Years and Legacy
In 1994, Leo de Berardinis became the director of the St. Leonard Theatre in Bologna. From 1994 to 1997, he was also in charge of the artistic direction for the theatre festival in Santarcangelo di Romagna.
On May 4, 2001, the University of Bologna gave him an honorary degree. This special award recognized his important contributions to the arts and humanities.
Sadly, on June 16, 2001, Leo de Berardinis went into a coma after a medical procedure. He remained in a coma for seven years. He passed away in Rome on September 18, 2008.
