Leonid Azkaldian (Armenian: Լեոնիդ Ռուբենի Ազգալդյան) was an Armenian physicist and a brave military leader. He was born in Tbilisi in 1942. He is known for being one of the people who started and led the "Liberation Army" military group.

Who Was Leonid Azkaldian?
His Early Life and Studies
Leonid Azkaldian was born on November 22, 1942, in Tbilisi, which is in Georgia. In 1959, he finished Askanaz Mravyan school. The next year, in 1960, he started studying physics at Moscow State University. Later, he moved to Yerevan State University and graduated with high honors from the same physics department. After finishing his studies, he worked in many different areas of the national economy in the USSR.
Protecting Nagorno-Karabakh
Leonid Azkaldian was one of the important people who helped start the Karabakh movement. This movement was about the future of Nagorno-Karabakh, a region that was part of Azerbaijan but had many Armenian people living there. From February 1990, he helped plan and organize the defense of several areas in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.
The "Liberation Army"
In June 1991, Leonid Azkaldian and Hovsep Hovsepyan together started a military group called the "Liberation Army." Their main goal was to protect the Armenian people living in Nagorno-Karabakh and make sure they could decide their own future.
His Lasting Impact
Sadly, Leonid Azkaldian was killed on June 21, 1992. This happened in the village of Tonashen, in the Martakert region of Nagorno-Karabakh. After his death, he was honored with a special award called the Order of the Combat Cross of the First Degree. This award recognized his bravery and his important work.
