Leonid Sergeyevich Bronevoy (Russian: Леони́д Серге́евич Бронево́й; December 17, 1928 – December 9, 2017) was a famous Soviet and Russian actor. He was mostly a stage actor at the Lenkom Theatre. Bronevoy also acted in many films. He was named a People's Artist of the USSR in 1987. This is a very high honor for artists. He also won the Nika Award in 2008.
Early Life
Leonid Bronevoy was born in Kyiv on December 17, 1928. His family was Jewish. When he was a child, he learned to play the violin. His teacher was David Solomonovich Berthier, a professor at the Kyiv Conservatory.
Leonid's father, Solomon Bronevoy, worked in government. In 1936, when Leonid was young, his father was arrested. This was a very difficult time for their family. Leonid's mother divorced his father and changed Leonid's middle name to "Sergeyevich." But this did not help. As a "family of an enemy of the people," Leonid and his mother were sent away to a place called Malmyzh.
In 1941, his family was allowed to return to Kyiv. But because of World War II, they had to move again. They were sent to Chimkent, Kazakh SSR. There, Leonid went to high school and started working to help his family.
Acting Career
In 1950, Leonid finished his studies at the Alexander Ostrovsky Tashkent Theatrical Art Institute. After graduating, he worked in drama theaters in Magnitogorsk and Orenburg.
In 1953, Leonid moved to Moscow. He was able to join the third year of the Moscow Art Theater School. He finished his studies there in 1955. After that, he acted in theaters in Grozny, Irkutsk, and Voronezh.
From 1962 to 1988, he was a main actor at the Moscow Drama Theatre on Malaya Bronnaya
. Then, in 1988, he started performing at the famous Lenkom Theatre in Moscow.Bronevoy became a huge star in the Soviet Union after playing the role of Heinrich Müller in the TV series Seventeen Moments of Spring. Even though he didn't look exactly like the real Müller, his acting was so good and funny that his character became very famous.
He also played other popular characters. These include the Doctor in the comedy Formula of Love and the Duke of Hanover in The Very Same Munchhausen.
Leonid Bronevoy acted in more than 20 films. His last role was in the film Simple Things in 2007. For this role, he received the Nika Award in March 2008.
