Leonidas Township is a small community located in St. Joseph County, in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a type of local government area known as a civil township. According to the 2020 census, about 1,161 people live here.

A Look Back in Time
Early Settlers and Mills
The first settlers arrived in Leonidas Township in 1831. They came from the state of New York. In 1832, two brothers named James and Robert Cowen built a mill. This mill was located along a stream called Nottawa Creek. The area around their mill became known as Cowen's Mills.
The Village of Leonidas
Later, in 1846, a plan was made for a village in the area. This planned village was named Leonidas.
Factoryville's Beginnings
Another important place in the township was Factoryville. It started around a sawmill built in 1839. This sawmill was also on Nottawa Creek. A few years later, in 1842, a factory that made woolen cloth was added to Factoryville. This community even had its own post office from 1888 until 1907.
