De mulieribus claris (BnF Français 599) f.53v - Leuntium
An old drawing of Leontion from a book called De mulieribus claris.

Leontion (who lived around 300 BC) was a smart Greek philosopher. She followed the ideas of Epicurus, a famous thinker. Leontion was known for her sharp mind and for writing strong arguments about philosophy.

Her Life and Ideas

Leontion was a student of Epicurus, a very important Greek philosopher. She learned a lot from his ideas, which are called Epicureanism. This philosophy taught people how to live a happy and peaceful life. Leontion was also a companion of Metrodorus of Lampsacus, another student of Epicurus. We don't have many details about her life.

A writer named Diogenes Laërtius saved a small part of a letter from Epicurus to Leontion. In this letter, Epicurus praised her for her excellent arguments. He thought her writing was very good, even though we don't know what specific ideas she was arguing against.

Her Writings and Reputation

Leontion was brave enough to challenge other famous thinkers. According to Cicero, she wrote arguments that criticized Theophrastus. He was a very well-known philosopher at the time.

Pliny, another ancient writer, was surprised that a woman could write such strong arguments against someone like Theophrastus. This shows that Leontion was a truly gifted philosopher. Her ability to debate and write about complex ideas was remarkable for her time.

A famous painter named Aristides of Thebes even painted a picture of her. It was called "Leontion thinking of Epicurus." This painting shows how important she was in the world of philosophy.
