A Look at Its History
Lepaterique has a notable past, especially concerning a military base located there.
The Military Base in the 1980s
During the 1980s, a military base in Lepaterique was used for training. Groups involved in conflicts in the region, known as the Contras, used this base. Also, a special intelligence group from Argentina was present there. This group was involved in a wider operation in South America.
Recent Activities at the Base
More recently, in August 2005, news reports in Honduras shared information about the base. A company that provides security services, called Triple Canopy, Inc., was using the base. They were training people there before sending them to work in places like Iraq. This shows how the base has been used for different purposes over time.
