The paddy earhead bug, Leptocorisa acuta, is a type of true bug. It is found in northern Australia, Malesia, and Taiwan. This insect is also known as a "rice bug." It belongs to the Alydidae family of insects. Sometimes, people might confuse it with another similar bug called Leptocorisa oratoria.

Why This Bug is a Problem

The paddy earhead bug is considered a pest because it can cause damage to important crops. A pest is any animal or insect that harms plants, animals, or humans. These bugs especially like to feed on rice plants. They also feed on other grains like sorghum, pearl millet, and finger millet in Asia.

How Rice Bugs Damage Crops

Rice bugs feed on the developing grains of rice plants. They prefer the grains when they are in the "milk stage." This is when the grains are soft and filled with a milky liquid. The bugs use their mouthparts to suck out this liquid.

When the bugs feed, they can reduce the quality of the rice grains. They can also lower the amount of rice that farmers can harvest. This means less food and less income for farmers.

Challenges for Farmers

The damage from these bugs often happens close to harvest time. If farmers try to control the bugs by spraying insecticides, there's a risk. Harmful chemicals, called pesticide residues, could be left on the crop. This makes it tricky for farmers to protect their crops safely. They need to find ways to control the bugs without harming people who eat the rice.
