Leptophryne is a small group of real toads, also known as "true toads." There are only two types, or species, of Leptophryne toads. You can find them in parts of Southeast Asia, specifically in Peninsular Thailand and across the Malay Peninsula.
What are Leptophryne Toads?
Leptophryne is a genus of toads. A genus is like a family group for animals that are very similar. These toads belong to the Bufonidae family, which includes many different kinds of true toads found all over the world.
Where Do They Live?
These toads are found in tropical areas of Southeast Asia. This includes the southern part of Thailand, which is called Peninsular Thailand. They also live throughout the Malay Peninsula, which is a long piece of land that includes parts of Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.
Types of Leptophryne Toads
There are two known species of Leptophryne toads. Each one has a scientific name and a common name that people use:
- Leptophryne borbonica: This toad is often called the Java Tree Toad or the Bourbon Toad.
- Leptophryne cruentata: This species is also known as the Indonesia Tree Toad.
