The Lerum Train Incident
Lerum was in the news around the world on November 16, 1987. This happened when two trains crashed near the local station. Sadly, 9 people passed away and 140 were hurt.
The accident happened because a control cable for the train tracks was connected wrong. This cable had been dug up by accident. When trains were finally allowed to pass, one train going to Gothenburg was sent onto the wrong track. Another train was coming the other way. This was due to a mistake in talking between the repair person and the traffic leader.
A trainmaster who was not working that day was on one of the trains. He heard the driver say something like, "Hell, now that's a crash." He quickly opened the side door and jumped out. The trains crashed while he was still in the air. Even though the train was going about 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph), he survived with only a broken foot.
The trains involved were Rc4 1292 and 1300. They were taken apart right there after the crash.
