Les Promenades Gatineau is a big shopping mall in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. It's in the National Capital Region. You can find it near busy streets like Greber and Maloney Boulevards. This mall is the largest in Gatineau. It has the most stores and visitors.

About Les Promenades Gatineau

Les Promenades Gatineau is one of the biggest malls in the Gatineau-Ottawa area. It has a huge amount of space for stores. The mall also has a three-story office building. This building has a dental clinic and government offices.

The mall is all on one level. It has many different hallways and sections. This can sometimes make it tricky to find smaller shops. Some of the main stores are La Baie d'Hudson, Costco, La Maison Simons, and Sports Experts.

This shopping center is in a very busy part of the city. Many people come from all over to visit it. It is easy to reach by public transport. A high school, Polyvalente Le Carrefour, is right across the street. Students often visit the mall during lunch or after school. The mall has recently been completely updated. It now has new stores like H&M and La Maison Simons.

History of the Mall

The mall first opened in 1978. It was called Les Promenades de l'Outaouais back then. It quickly became a popular place to shop in Gatineau and nearby areas.

Changes in the 1990s

In the 1990s and early 2000s, the mall faced some challenges. Several large store spaces became empty. Some big stores, called anchor tenants, even closed down. In the 1990s, stores like Kmart, Eaton's, and Steinberg closed. These were once three of the mall's main stores.

The old Kmart spot was later used by a Laura superstore. It was also briefly used by The Bay for appliances. This space has since been made bigger. It now holds the new La Maison Simons store.

In the late 1990s, the mall added a large new section on its east side. Before this, the mall ended where the Famous Players movie theaters were. After the renovation, a new main store, la Baie, opened. Also added were a Dollarama, a food court, and a new office building. There was also a hair salon and a special area for small shops.

New Stores and Updates

During the 1990s, the Eaton's store on the west side of the mall closed. This area stayed mostly empty for several years. However, in March 2006, Costco moved its store here. This brought new life to the west end of the mall. Archambault, a music store from Quebec, also opened in 2005. It was near Costco and the mall's Chinese restaurant.

Steinberg also had a supermarket in the mall since it opened. But it closed in 1992 when the company stopped operating. The space was later used by Super C and then Metro. In 2008, Metro closed, and the space was empty for a while. Urban Planet then took over. In 2017, Urban Planet moved to a smaller spot. This made room for Marshalls and HomeSense, which opened in March 2018.

Getting to the Mall

The mall is very easy to get to. It is at one of the city's busiest intersections. It is also close to the city's main highway. There are lots of parking spaces available.

Public Transport

The Société de transport de l'Outaouais (STO) offers many bus routes to the mall. These buses travel to different parts of the city. The mall is considered a very important bus hub. It is the most important one outside of the city center. About 8,000 shoppers use public transport to get to the mall every day.

The STO also has a large Park and Ride area near the mall. It used to have over 500 parking spots. The STO also rebuilt the bus terminal and opened a client service center inside the mall. This service center later moved to La Cité Station. This happened when the Rapibus Transit Corridor opened on October 19, 2013. The number of Park and Ride spaces was also made smaller. Getting to the mall by bus became much easier with the new Rapibus station. This station is on the north side of the mall.

Bus Routes Serving the Mall

Here are some of the bus routes that go to the shopping center:

  • Routes 57, 63, and 67 use La Savane Road.
  • Rapibus Routes 68, 100, 200, 300, 400, 800, and 810 serve Les Promenades Rapibus Station. This station is on the north side of Maloney Boulevard.
  • Before the Rapibus opened, most local bus routes in Gatineau ended at Les Promenades Gatineau. Now, most local routes end at La Gappe, La Cité, and Labrosse stations. From there, you can transfer to the Rapibus routes.
