Exploring Les Ulis
Les Ulis is a modern town that was largely built in the 1970s. It's known for its planned layout and residential areas. About 25,000 people live here.
Where is Les Ulis?
Les Ulis is situated about 23 kilometers (14 miles) southwest of the center of Paris. It's part of the wider Paris area, but it's not right in the middle of the busy city. The town is located in the Essonne department, which is one of the departments that make up the Île-de-France region around Paris.
How Les Ulis Grew
Long ago, the area where Les Ulis now stands was mostly countryside. Old maps from the 17th century show a very different landscape. In the 1960s and 1970s, France needed more housing for its growing population. So, new towns were planned and built around Paris. Les Ulis was one of these "new towns."
Building a New Town
Construction in Les Ulis really took off in the 1970s. You can see from old photos that it was a huge building site back then. Workers built many apartment buildings and public spaces to create a new community. The goal was to create a comfortable place for people to live, with schools, shops, and parks nearby.
Local Government
Like all towns in France, Les Ulis has its own local government. This government is run by a mayor and a town council. They make decisions about things like local services, schools, and town planning. The current mayor of Les Ulis is Clovis Cassan. He helps lead the town and works for its residents.
