Leslie baronets facts for kids
A baronetcy is a special title given by the British Crown. It's like being a knight, but the title can be passed down through the family, usually to the oldest son. It's a bit like a hereditary knighthood.
The Leslie family has had four different baronet titles created for them. These titles were created in different parts of the United Kingdom and its former territories:
- One in Baronetage of Nova Scotia (a former British colony in Canada)
- One in the Baronetage of Ireland
- One in the Baronetage of Great Britain
- One in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom
As of 2010, three of these Leslie baronet titles still exist.

The Leslie Baronets of Wardis and Findrassie (1625)
This baronetcy was created on September 1, 1625. It was given to John Leslie, from Wardis and Findrassie in Moray, Scotland. This title was meant to be passed down to his male heirs.
John Leslie came from the Balquhain branch of the Leslie family. This family is also connected to the Leslie Counts of the Holy Roman Empire. You can learn more about their family history at Clan Leslie.
When the second Baronet died in 1645, the title was supposed to go to his uncle, William Leslie. However, William chose not to use the title. This was because he didn't also get the Wardis estate. His four sons all passed away without having children.
Around the year 1800, John Leslie, who was the fourth Baronet, took on the title. He was a descendant of Norman Leslie, who was the younger brother of the third Baronet.
The person who is thought to be the tenth Baronet has not officially proven his claim. Because of this, his name is not on the official list of Baronets.
- Sir John Leslie, 1st Baronet (died 1640)
- Sir John Leslie, 2nd Baronet (died 1645)
- Sir William Leslie, 3rd Baronet (died around 1680) – He did not use the title, so it became inactive.
- Sir John Leslie, 4th Baronet (around 1750–1825) – He took on the title around 1800.

The Leslie Baronets of Glaslough (1876)
This baronetcy was created in the United Kingdom on February 21, 1876. It was given to John Leslie from Glaslough in County Monaghan, Ireland.
Sir John Leslie was a Conservative Member of Parliament for Monaghan. A Member of Parliament (MP) is a person elected to represent a group of people in a national parliament.
He was a descendant of John Leslie, who was the Bishop of Clogher. This Bishop John Leslie was the son of George Leslie of Crichie. George Leslie was the second son of Walter Leslie of Wardis, and he was also the uncle of the first Baronet of the 1625 creation (mentioned above).
The third Baronet in this line was a diplomat and a writer. Lionel Alister David Leslie (1900–1987), who was the fourth son of the second Baronet, was a sculptor, author, and explorer.
Desmond Leslie, a younger son of the third Baronet, was a filmmaker, writer, and musician. Anita Leslie, who was the daughter of the third Baronet, was also a writer. One of her famous books is Lady Randolph Churchill: The Story of Jennie Jerome.
The Leslie Baronets of Glaslough could also potentially inherit the Leslie Baronetcy of Wardis and Findrassie.
