The Deidamia inscriptum, also known as the lettered sphinx moth, is a special type of moth. It belongs to a group of moths called Sphingidae, often known as sphinx moths or hawk-moths. This moth is the only species in its entire genus, Deidamia.

A scientist named Thaddeus William Harris first described this moth in 1839. Later, in 1859, James Brackenridge Clemens officially named its genus.

Where the Lettered Sphinx Moth Lives

This interesting moth can be found across many parts of North America. You might spot it in places like Florida and Mississippi. It also lives further north in Michigan, Wisconsin, Ontario (Canada), Quebec (Canada), and South Carolina.

What the Lettered Sphinx Moth Looks Like

The lettered sphinx moth has a wingspan that measures between 45 and 70 millimeters. The wingspan is the distance from the tip of one wing to the tip of the other when the wings are spread out. This makes it a medium-sized moth.

Life Cycle and Food

The young of the lettered sphinx moth are called larvae, or caterpillars. These caterpillars have a specific diet. They mostly eat the leaves of certain plants. Their favorite foods include plants from the Vitis genus, which are grapevines. They also enjoy Ampelopsis species, often called peppervines, and Parthenocissus species, like Virginia creeper.
