History of the Center
The Letterman Digital Arts Center officially opened on June 25, 2005. This huge center cost about $350 million to build. It covers 850,000 square feet (79,000 square meters). Around 1,500 employees started working there in July 2005.
Designing the LDAC Campus
The outdoor areas and gardens were designed by a famous landscape architect named Lawrence Halprin. He also helped restore Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco. The main design for the buildings came from Gensler. Another company, HKS, Inc., was the architect of record.
What You Can See at LDAC
The lobby of Building B is open to the public during normal business hours. Inside, you can find a cool gallery of Lucasfilm items. These include props and costumes from the famous Star Wars movies. Outside, near the entrance to Building B, there is a fountain. It features a life-sized statue of Yoda, a beloved character from Star Wars.
How the Center Got Its Name
The Presidio area used to be a base for the U.S. Army. The arts center is named after the old Letterman Army Hospital that was once on this site. The hospital was named after Dr. Jonathan Letterman. He was a medical director for the Army of the Potomac during the U.S. Civil War.
Environmentally Friendly Building
The Letterman Digital Arts Center earned a special award called LEED Gold certification. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. One big reason it got this award is that it was built using recycled parts. These parts came from the old Letterman Army Hospital building that was there before.
