Levels is a small, unincorporated community in Hampshire County, located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. An unincorporated community means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. In the year 2000, about 147 people lived in Levels. It is also home to John J. Cornwell Elementary School.
What's in a Name?
The community got its name because the original area where it was built was quite flat, or "level." Levels was first known as Levels Cross Roads. This name came from its location where four different roads met. Imagine a big "X" on a map – that's where Levels was! These roads connected Levels to other places. For example, Bright's Hollow Road went north to Okonoko. Little Cacapon-Levels Road went southeast to Slanesville. Jersey Mountain Road led south to Romney. And Frenches Station Road went northwest to South Branch Depot.
