Levi Lincoln, Sr. (born May 15, 1749 – died April 14, 1820) was an important American leader. He played many roles in the early days of the United States. He was a brave soldier, a lawyer, and a politician.
Lincoln was a Minuteman during the start of the American Revolutionary War. This means he was ready to fight for freedom at a moment's notice. After the war, he became a state legislator in Massachusetts. He also served as the Governor of Massachusetts and Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts.
He was a U.S. Representative in the national government. One of his most important jobs was being the Attorney General for President Thomas Jefferson. He even served as the Acting Secretary of State for a short time.

Early Life and the Revolution
Levi Lincoln, Sr. was born in Hingham, Massachusetts. He grew up during a time when America was fighting for its independence from Great Britain. He studied at Harvard College and became a lawyer.
When the American Revolutionary War began, Lincoln joined the fight. He was part of the local militia, known as the Minutemen. These citizen soldiers were ready to defend their homes and freedom. He fought in some of the early battles of the war.
Serving in Government
After the war, Levi Lincoln continued to serve his country. He became involved in politics in Massachusetts. He was elected to the state legislature, helping to make laws for his home state.
As Attorney General
In 1801, President Thomas Jefferson chose Levi Lincoln to be the United States Attorney General. This is the chief lawyer for the U.S. government. In this role, Lincoln gave legal advice to the President and helped enforce federal laws. He served in this important national position until 1805.
One famous case during his time was Marbury v. Madison. This case was very important for establishing the power of the Supreme Court. It showed that the Supreme Court could decide if a law was constitutional or not.
Leading Massachusetts
After his time as Attorney General, Lincoln returned to Massachusetts. He was elected as the Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts in 1807. This role is like a vice-governor.
When Governor James Sullivan passed away, Levi Lincoln became the Acting Governor of Massachusetts. He served as the state's leader from December 1808 to May 1809. He helped guide Massachusetts during a time of change.
Later Life
Levi Lincoln continued to be an influential person in Massachusetts. He was respected for his long career of public service. He passed away on April 14, 1820, in Worcester, Massachusetts. His legacy lives on as one of the important figures in early American history.
