Early Life and Education
Lewis Este Mills went to Yale College and graduated in 1856. After college, he began studying law in his hometown of Morristown. He then moved to Cincinnati to finish his law studies. In November 1858, he officially became a lawyer.
Becoming a Lawyer
After becoming a lawyer, Mills joined a law firm called Mills & Hoadly. His older brother, Edward Mills, was the main partner in this firm. In 1859, Lewis Este Mills started another law partnership with A. T. Goshorn in Cincinnati.
Serving in the Civil War
Later in the American Civil War, Lewis Este Mills joined the Union Army. He volunteered to serve as an aide-de-camp (a personal assistant) for General R. B. Potter. During this time, he was part of the Army of the Southwest. He participated in important military actions, including the siege of Vicksburg.
Life After the War
After the Civil War ended, Lewis Este Mills returned to Cincinnati. On January 7, 1864, he married Jean Springer. She was the daughter of Charles Springer. After getting married, Mills slowly stopped working as a lawyer. He started spending more time traveling and writing.
His Writings and Travels
Lewis Este Mills published a revised version of a book called Handy's Reports of the Superior Court of Cincinnati in 1877. He also privately printed a book of his own in 1867. This book was called Glimpses of Southern France and Spain.
In the summer of 1877, he traveled to Europe for the fourth time. He visited Normandy and spent the winter in Brussels.
Later Years and Passing
Lewis Este Mills eventually traveled to Florence, Italy. He became very ill there with a kidney disease. On April 10, 1878, he sadly died from a sudden heart attack. He was 41 years old. His wife, Jean Springer, survived him, but they did not have any children.
