Lewiston is a place in South Australia that feels a bit like the countryside but is also close to towns. It's about 6 kilometers (4 miles) east of Two Wells, 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) west of Gawler, and 56 kilometers (35 miles) north of the big city of Adelaide.

In 2011, about 2,947 people lived in Lewiston. This area is mostly known for its farms, where people raise animals and grow crops.

How Lewiston Got Its Name

Lewiston was given its name by the people living there in December 1864. They chose the name to honor James William Lewis. He was the Post Master General of South Australia from 1861 to 1869. A Post Master General is like the main boss of all the mail services in a region.

Mr. Lewis had agreed to open a small Post Office branch for the Lewiston area. This new Post Office was going to be inside the local school building. The name Lewiston was first officially used when this Post Office branch opened on February 1, 1865. The very first person in charge of the Post Office there was Isabella Mitchell, whose husband, William Mitchell, was the school master.

The Old Lewiston School

The school in Lewiston first opened its doors in January 1857. Back then, it was known as the Port Gawler East school. A few years later, in 1866, the school's name was changed to Lewiston, just like the Post Office. The school continued to teach students for many years but eventually closed down in 1944. After it closed, the building was taken down.
