Penfield Gardens is a suburb located in the northern part of Adelaide, South Australia. It is part of the City of Playford area. This suburb is found on the edge of the city, in a flat area known as the Adelaide Plains.

The main activities in Penfield Gardens include market gardening, which means growing fruits and vegetables for sale. It is also a place where people train horses for harness racing. The suburb stretches from the Gawler River to the Max Fatchen Expressway. Penfield Gardens got its name in 1983. Its borders were changed in 2011 to make sure the expressway did not split any suburbs.

History of Carclew Church

The Carclew Primitive Methodist Church has a long history in Penfield Gardens. It was first built in 1850 on what is now Carclew Road. This original church was later replaced by a new building.

The New Church Building

The newer church building opened its doors on June 12, 1870. People attended regular services there for many years. However, services stopped completely in 1919. Even after services ended, the church building and its cemetery were looked after by trustees for a long time.

What Happened to the Church?

The church's furniture was sold to an Anglican church in Lobethal. In 1965, the District Council of Munno Para took over ownership of the church property. This council later became the City of Playford in 1997. The church building itself was sold in 2003 and is now a private home.

The Carclew Cemetery

The cemetery at Carclew is still managed by the City of Playford. However, no new burials are allowed there. The land for both the church and the cemetery was given by a man named Jonathon Roberts. He named his property "Carclew" after a place in Cornwall, England, where he used to live before moving to Australia.
