The Lexington History Center was a special place in downtown Lexington, Kentucky. It used to hold several different history museums all in one building! This building was the old Fayette County Courthouse. The center was open from October 2003 until July 2012. The city closed the building for important renovations. Before the building closed, one museum, the Isaac Scott Hathaway Museum, moved to a new spot. Today, the old courthouse building has been updated. It is now used for shops, offices, and events.

What Was Inside the Center?

The Lexington History Center was home to several interesting museums. Each museum told a different part of history. Here are some of the museums that were once located there:

Lexington History Museum

The Lexington History Museum showed many exhibits about Lexington's past. It also offered fun programs for people of all ages. After the history center closed, this museum found new ways to share its exhibits. It used empty spaces downtown to create small "pocket museums." The Lexington History Museum officially reopened on August 26, 2023. You can now visit it at 210 North Broadway. It is located in the auditorium of the historic Thomas Hunt Morgan House. This new opening is the start of an exciting, reimagined museum experience.

Lexington Public Safety Museum

The Lexington Public Safety Museum opened on November 20, 2004. This museum had exhibits about the history of Lexington's police, fire, and corrections departments. It also honored the brave people who gave their lives serving the community. The Public Safety Museum has not yet reopened in a new location.

Kentucky Renaissance Pharmacy Museum

The Kentucky Renaissance Pharmacy Museum focused on the early history of pharmacies in the Bluegrass region. It showed how medicines were made and sold long ago. This museum has since reopened in Frankfort.

Isaac Scott Hathaway Museum

The Isaac Scott Hathaway Museum focused on the history of African Americans in the local area. It moved to a new location on Georgetown Street before the main building closed.
