Li Mu's Early Life and Battles
Li Mu started his military career around 265 BC. He was sent to protect the northern borders of Zhao from attacks by nomadic tribes called the Xiongnu. These tribes often raided Zhao's lands.
At first, Li Mu used a very careful defensive strategy. He avoided direct battles and focused on protecting the people and their homes. Some people thought he was being too cautious, and he was even replaced for a short time by a general who wanted to fight more aggressively.
A Clever Victory Against the Xiongnu
When Li Mu returned, he came up with a smart plan. He made it look like his army was weak and easy to defeat. He even left some supplies behind to trick the Xiongnu. The Xiongnu leader, called the Chanyu, thought this was a great chance to attack.
The Chanyu sent a huge army to invade Zhao. But Li Mu was ready! He had secretly prepared a large army with many chariots, cavalry, and archers. When the Xiongnu attacked, Li Mu's forces surrounded them. They won a massive victory, defeating hundreds of thousands of Xiongnu warriors and horses. This big win made the Xiongnu leader flee and greatly weakened their power.
Fighting Other States
Li Mu also led Zhao's armies against other Chinese states. In 243 BC, he fought against the State of Yan and successfully captured some of their cities.
Defending Zhao from Qin
As time went on, the State of Qin became the biggest threat to Zhao. Qin was very powerful and wanted to unite all of China under its rule. Zhao had already lost many soldiers in a big battle against Qin years before, which made them weaker.
Other states like Wei and Han were too weak to help Zhao. And states like Qi and Chu didn't want to get involved. This meant Zhao was mostly on its own against the mighty Qin.
Li Mu's Skill Against Qin
Even though Qin was much stronger, Li Mu was able to hold his ground. He made it very difficult for Qin armies to invade Zhao and take their resources. While Qin could easily raid other states, they struggled when Li Mu was in command.
In 233 BC, a Qin army attacked Zhao cities. Li Mu was put in charge of the Zhao army. He met the Qin forces in battle and completely defeated them. For this great victory, he was given the special title of Marquis of Wu'an.
The next year, in 232 BC, Qin tried to invade Zhao again. They captured a city, but Li Mu once again defeated them in another battle.
The Fall of Li Mu
In 229 BC, the Qin army, led by the famous general Wang Jian, launched a major invasion of Zhao. But even Wang Jian couldn't defeat Li Mu. The battle turned into a stalemate, meaning neither side could win.
Qin knew they couldn't conquer Zhao as long as Li Mu was leading their army. So, they came up with a sneaky plan. They sent spies to the Zhao court and bribed some important officials. These officials then lied to the King of Zhao, telling him that Li Mu was planning to rebel.
The King of Zhao believed these lies. He ordered Li Mu to be removed from his position. Soon after, Li Mu was either executed or forced to take his own life.
With Li Mu gone, Zhao lost its best defender. The Qin army quickly defeated Zhao, and the state fell soon after. This was a big step for Qin in their goal to unite all of China.
Li Mu's Legacy
Li Mu is still remembered today as a hero. Sometimes, you might see his image in Chinese temples, often alongside another famous general, Bai Qi. There's also a temple dedicated to him at Yanmen Pass in Shanxi, a place he once defended. He even appears as a character in popular stories and shows, like the manga and anime series Kingdom.
