Li River facts for kids

The Li River, also known as Li Jiang in Chinese, is a beautiful river in Guilin, Guangxi, China. It's super famous for its amazing scenery! Imagine tall, unique mountains and calm waters. Many people love to explore it by boat.

Journey of the Li River

The Li River begins its journey at Mount Mao'er. It flows for about 83 kilometers (52 miles) to the southeast. This part of the river goes from Guilin all the way to Yangshuo. After Yangshuo, the river keeps flowing south. It changes its name to the Gui River.

The Gui River then joins another river called the Xi Jiang River. This happens near the city of Wuzhou. The Xi Jiang River is a major branch of the Pearl River. The Pearl River is one of China's biggest rivers. It flows through Guangdong province.

How Long is the River System?

The entire river system is quite long! It stretches for about 437 kilometers (271 miles). This long path includes the Li River, the Gui River, the Xijiang River, and the Pearl River. It travels all the way from Guangxi province to Guangdong province. Finally, this amazing river system empties into the South China Sea.

Amazing Scenery of the Li River

The Li River is known worldwide for its stunning natural beauty. The landscape here is called "Karst." This means the mountains have unique, often pointy shapes. They look like giant natural sculptures. These mountains were formed over millions of years. Water slowly dissolved the limestone rock.

Many people enjoy taking a boat cruise on the Li River. It's a fantastic way to see the incredible views. You can see farmers working in their fields. You might also spot traditional fishing boats. Some fishermen still use trained birds called cormorants to catch fish! The scenery is so famous that a picture of the Li River near Xingping is on the back of the 20 Yuan banknote.
