Liao Guoxun (Chinese: 廖国勋) was an important Chinese politician. He was born in February 1963 and passed away on April 27, 2022. He served as the mayor of Tianjin, a major city in China, and also as its deputy party chief. He belonged to the Tujia ethnic group.

Liao Guoxun was born in Chengdu, Sichuan province. He studied at Guizhou Normal University and the Central Party School of the Chinese Communist Party. He started his career as a teacher in Kaili. Later, he began working in government in the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture. He held important roles, including deputy party chief and then party chief of Tongren. He also became a member of the Communist Party's Standing Committees in the provinces of Guizhou and Zhejiang, and in the big city of Shanghai.

He was chosen as a representative for the 11th and 13th National People's Congress. He also attended the 18th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party and the 19th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party. These are important meetings for the Chinese Communist Party.

Early Life and Education

Liao Guoxun was born in Chengdu, Sichuan province, in February 1963. After the national college entrance exam was brought back, he was accepted into Guizhou Normal University. There, he chose to study chemistry.

Political Career

Starting in Guizhou

After finishing university in August 1983, Liao Guoxun became a teacher. He worked at Kaili No. 4 High School. He also served as the deputy secretary for the Communist Youth League Committee there.

In January 1986, he moved into politics. He joined the Organization Department of the Communist Party Committee in Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture. By June 2007, he was appointed deputy party chief of Tongren. Later, he became the party chief of Tongren. During this time, he held various positions in the Communist Party's Guizhou Provincial Committee. In April 2012, he was elected as a member of the Standing Committee of the Guizhou Provincial Committee. This was a very high-level position.

Working in Zhejiang

In April 2015, Liao Guoxun moved to Zhejiang province in eastern China. He was appointed as the head of the Organization Department for the Communist Party Committee in Zhejiang. He also became a member of the Provincial Standing Committee there.

Role in Shanghai

About a year and a half later, he moved to the nearby city of Shanghai. He became a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party's Shanghai Municipal Committee. He was also made the secretary of the party's anti-corruption agency in Shanghai, called the Commission for Discipline Inspection.

On January 28, 2018, he was chosen to be the director of the new Shanghai Municipal Supervisory Commission. This government agency also works to fight corruption. On February 28, 2020, he was promoted to deputy party chief of Shanghai. He held this important role until the end of August 2020.

Serving as Mayor of Tianjin

On August 31, 2020, Liao Guoxun was appointed deputy party chief of Tianjin municipality in northern China. He became the acting mayor on September 3. Then, on September 16, he was officially installed as the mayor. His last public appearance was on April 24, 2022. He attended and spoke at a meeting in Tianjin about preventing and controlling pollution.

Death

Liao Guoxun passed away on April 27, 2022, at the age of 59. His death was caused by a sudden illness. The news was shared on the public account of the newspaper Tianjin Daily on WeChat the next evening. The announcement was very brief.
