LUMSA University is a private Catholic university in Rome. It was founded in 1939. Its full name in Italian is Libera Università Maria Santissima Assunta, which means "Free University of Mary Most Holy". LUMSA is the second-oldest university in Rome, after Sapienza.

History of LUMSA University
The university started in 1939 as the "Istituto Superiore di Magistero Maria Ss. Assunta." This was an educational institute mainly for nuns. It was founded by Luigia Tincani.
In 1989, the institute became a full university. It was renamed "Libera Università Maria SS. Assunta" (LUMSA). At first, it was only for women. However, in 1991, LUMSA opened its doors to men as well.

LUMSA is a private Catholic school. It has the freedom to manage itself. Its degrees are recognized as equal to those from public universities in Italy.
A special group of people leads the university. This group includes a President, a Rector, and other important members. Since 2017, Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo has been the President.
