Liberation Day (which in Dutch is Bevrijdingsdag) is a special public holiday in the Netherlands. It marks the end of the German occupation of the country. This happened during World War II.

This important day happens on 5 May each year. It comes right after Remembrance of the Dead (Dodenherdenking) on 4 May. That day is when people remember those who died in wars.

How the Netherlands Became Free

The Netherlands was freed by soldiers from many different countries. These included Canadian, British, Polish, American, Belgian, Dutch, and Czechoslovak troops.

Some parts of the country, especially in the southeast, were freed by the British Second Army. This group also included American and Polish paratroopers. They were part of a big plan called Operation Market Garden. French paratroopers also helped in Operation Amherst.

The Official Surrender

On 5 May 1945, a very important meeting took place. It was at Hotel de Wereld in Wageningen. A Canadian general, Charles Foulkes, met with the German commander, Johannes Blaskowitz.

They agreed that all German forces in the Netherlands would give up. The official paper was signed the very next day. This happened in a building next to the hotel, at Wageningen University.

How Liberation Day is Celebrated Today

After the country was freed in 1945, Liberation Day was first celebrated only every five years. But in 1990, it became a national holiday. This means it is now remembered and celebrated every single year.

People celebrate all over the Netherlands. There are often parades where war veterans march. Many music festivals are also held across the country. These events help everyone remember the freedom they gained.
