A Look at Liberty's Past

People started settling in the area where Liberty is now as early as 1855. The village was founded by an early settler named David Palmer. He ran a trading post there.

Liberty grew when railroad workers came to build tracks through the village. In 1890, when it was at its busiest, Liberty had 469 people. It had many businesses like grocery stores, a hotel, and even its own newspaper, The Liberty Journal.

However, a big money problem in 1893, called the Panic of 1893, hit Liberty hard. Many farmers sold their land and left. The village never fully recovered after that time.

Famous People from Liberty

  • Kenneth S. Wherry was a U.S. Senator from Nebraska. He served from 1943 to 1951. He was also the leader of the Republican party in the Senate.
