Lifehouse is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California. The band's main members are Jason Wade (who sings and plays guitar), Rick Woolstenhulme Jr. (drums), and Bryce Soderberg (bass and vocals). They became very popular in 2001 with their hit song "Hanging by a Moment". This song was from their first album, No Name Face.

"Hanging by a Moment" was a huge success. It was number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart for three weeks. It also reached number two on the main Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song even won a Billboard Music Award for "Hot 100 Single of the Year" in 2001. It stayed on the charts for over a year!

Since then, Lifehouse has released many more albums. These include Stanley Climbfall (2002), their self-titled Lifehouse (2005), Who We Are (2007), Smoke and Mirrors (2010), Almería (2012), and Out of the Wasteland (2015). Many of their songs, like "You and Me" and "First Time", have been big hits in the US. So far, Lifehouse has sold over 15 million records around the world.

The Story of Lifehouse

Early Days: Blyss and Starting Out (1996–1999)

The band started with Jason Wade. He began writing songs to help him through his parents' divorce. In 1995, he moved to Los Angeles and met his neighbor, Sergio Andrade, who played bass. The next year, Jason, Sergio, and Jon "Diff" Palmer formed a band called Blyss. They started playing shows at schools and colleges. Later, Collin Hayden and Aaron Lord joined the group.

A music producer named Ron Aniello heard about them. He introduced Jason to Jude Cole, who then connected him with DreamWorks Records. In 1998, DreamWorks Records helped Blyss record their first songs. Some of these songs were released in 1999 as an EP (a short album) called Diff's Lucky Day. They sold this EP at their concerts.

Becoming Lifehouse: No Name Face (2000–2001)

In 2000, Blyss changed their name to Lifehouse. They re-recorded and released many songs from their earlier EP as their first major album, No Name Face. Jason Wade explained that they chose the name Lifehouse because their music was about life and different situations people face.

No Name Face became very popular and helped the band become famous. It sold over 4 million copies worldwide. A big reason for this success was their first single, "Hanging by a Moment". This song was so popular that it was named the "No. 1 Song of the Year" on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, even though it didn't reach number one on the weekly charts.

Another song from the album, "Everything", was used in the popular TV show Smallville. Lifehouse songs were featured in many episodes of the show. The band even performed live at a prom in one episode!

After recording No Name Face, Jon "Diff" Palmer left the band. Jason Wade and Sergio Andrade were the only original members left. Soon after, they met Rick Woolstenhulme, who became their new full-time drummer.

New Album and Changes: Stanley Climbfall (2002–2004)

After touring a lot for No Name Face, Lifehouse quickly went back to the studio. They recorded their second album, Stanley Climbfall. The songs "Spin" and "Take Me Away" were released from this album.

In June 2002, Rick's brother, Sean Woolstenhulme, officially joined the band as the fourth member. He had already toured with them before. However, in April 2004, Sergio Andrade decided to leave the band to work on his own projects. Soon after, Sean also left to pursue other music.

A New Member and Big Hits: Lifehouse (2004–2005)

With Sergio and Sean gone, Jason Wade and Rick Woolstenhulme were the main members. In September 2004, Bryce Soderberg joined Lifehouse as their new bass player.

They recorded their third album, also called Lifehouse, in less than two months. It was released on March 22, 2005. The first song from this album, "You and Me", became a huge hit. It stayed on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart for 62 weeks, which is one of the longest times ever! This song was also featured in Smallville and many other TV shows like Grey's Anatomy.

More Music: Who We Are (2006–2008)

Lifehouse started recording their fourth album, Who We Are, in mid-2006. The album was released on June 19, 2007. The band said this album "rocks a little harder" than their last one. After the album came out, they went on tour with The Goo Goo Dolls.

The first song from the album was "First Time", a bright pop-rock love song. It was released in April 2007 and became a top hit on the Hot Adult Top 40 Charts. The song "Broken" from this album was also used in several TV shows, including Grey's Anatomy and Criminal Minds.

Adding a Member: Smoke and Mirrors (2008–2011)

In April 2009, the band announced that Ben Carey was now an official member. He had been touring with them since 2004.

Their single "Halfway Gone" was released in October 2009. The album Smoke & Mirrors came out on March 2, 2010. This album was their highest-charting debut, reaching number 6 on the Billboard 200 chart.

New Sounds: Almería (2011–2012)

On September 11, 2012, Lifehouse released a new song called "Between the Raindrops", which featured singer Natasha Bedingfield. A month later, they announced their sixth album would be called Almería. This name comes from a city in Spain famous for old Western movies. Almería was released in December 2012.

A Break and a Comeback: Out of the Wasteland (2013–Present)

In July 2013, Jason Wade announced that Lifehouse was taking a break. Each band member wanted to work on other projects for a while. Drummer Rick Woolstenhulme Jr. toured with the Goo Goo Dolls. Bassist Bryce Soderberg started a new band called KOMOX. Ben Carey worked with his country rock band, Elvis Monroe. Jason Wade worked on his own solo music. The band's last show before their break was on September 25, 2013.

In December 2014, Lifehouse shared that Ben Carey would no longer be a part of the band. He wanted to focus on his own music. For live shows, Steve Stout now plays lead guitar.

Lifehouse returned to the studio in May 2014. They released the song "Flight" in November. They also announced that their break was over and a new album, Seven, would come out in April 2015. The first official song from the new album, "Hurricane", was released in January 2015. The album's name was later changed to Out of the Wasteland and it was released on May 26, 2015. It quickly became number one on the Independent Albums chart.

In 2017, Lifehouse toured with the band Switchfoot across the United States. Jason Wade also worked with Switchfoot's Jon Foreman to raise money for people affected by Hurricane Harvey. In early 2018, Lifehouse toured South Africa with the band Collective Soul.

In 2019, The New York Times Magazine reported that some of Lifehouse's original music was lost in a fire at Universal Studios in 2008.

More About Lifehouse

People sometimes ask about the spiritual meaning in some of Lifehouse's songs. Singer Jason Wade has said that while he is a Christian, Lifehouse is not a "Christian band."

In 2007, the band covered The Rolling Stones' song "Beast of Burden". They said they wanted to honor the "godfathers of rock."

Jason Wade also wrote the song "From Where You Are" for a program about teen driving. The song was used in a TV commercial.
