Lika Ceni, born in 1749 in Ulcinj, was a famous Albanian sea captain and pirate leader. He was often known as Kapidan Lika Ceni. His adventures and daring actions made him a legendary figure in the history of the Adriatic Sea.

He was a well-known Albanian pirate from Ulcinj. Lika Ceni became famous for his bold actions at sea. He was part of a group of brave sailors, sometimes called Barbary corsairs. These groups helped take control of the port of Ulcinj from Venice. After that, Lika Ceni continued to raid merchant ships belonging to Venice and other countries along the Dalmatian coast.

The Legend of Lika Ceni

Lika Ceni's story is closely linked to another famous figure, Lambros Katsonis. Katsonis was a Greek naval admiral from the 18th century. He was born in 1752 and joined a rebellion against the Ottoman Empire in 1770. As a captain of the Greek fleet, Katsonis caused many problems for the Ottoman Sultan.

People called Lambros Katsonis by different names. Greeks called him Katsonis, while Italians used names like Lambro Cazziani. The name Ali Kaceni, by which Lika Ceni is sometimes remembered, is thought to come from Katsonis. This is because Lika Ceni was said to have defeated Lambros.

A Famous Sea Battle

The legend says that Lika Ceni defeated Lambros Katsonis. This earned Lika Ceni the name Ali Kaceni, meaning "Ali, the one who defeated Lambros Katsonis." However, this part of the story is an exaggeration. Lambros Katsonis was defeated in battle, but he was not killed by Lika Ceni. Instead, Lambros Katsonis later died in a battle with the Turks in Crimea.

Because of Lambros Katsonis's actions against the Ottomans, the Sultan wanted him stopped. The Sultan offered a reward and an official title to anyone who could defeat Katsonis. The legend says that Lika Ceni accepted this challenge. He then defeated Katsonis and was given the title "Kapidan," meaning "Captain."

A Daring Escape

Lika Ceni was very active in the Adriatic Sea and Mediterranean Sea. One of his most famous acts was a daring and controversial action involving a ship carrying travelers. Because of his bold activities, many Ottoman leaders and captains saw Lika Ceni as a big threat. The Sultan eventually ordered his capture and death.

Lika Ceni was detained near the Bosphorus strait. However, he managed to escape from the Ottoman blockade. He bravely returned to his home in Ulcinj. This escape further cemented his legend as a fearless and proud sea captain. His stories of bravery have been passed down through generations.

Family Legacy

It is believed that Lika Ceni's family line continues to this day. His descendants are said to carry the surnames Kapidani and Lazoja. These names serve as a reminder of their legendary ancestor, Kapidan Lika Ceni.
