The Likely Rancheria is a special area of land in northern California. It belongs to the Pit River Tribe, a group of Native Americans. This land is located in Modoc County.
A rancheria is a type of Native American reservation. It is land set aside by the United States government for Native American tribes. The Pit River Tribe is a federally recognized tribe. This means the U.S. government officially recognizes them as a sovereign nation.
The Likely Rancheria is quite small. It is only about 1.32 acres (or 5,300 square meters) in size. The Pit River Tribe bought this land in 1922. Today, it serves as their tribal cemetery, a place where their ancestors are buried. It is known for being the smallest Indian reservation in the entire United States.
