Early Life and Music Beginnings
Leanos was born on September 6, 1996, in Redlands, California. He grew up in a family that faced financial challenges, sometimes living in motels. He went to Redlands East Valley High School but left during his first year.
Before becoming a rapper, Leanos worked as a street cleaner. He also tried a career in photography, taking pictures for his friends who were rappers. When his camera was stolen, he decided to start rapping instead of buying a new camera.
Music Career Highlights
Lil Xan started gaining attention through music platforms like SoundCloud and YouTube. His popularity grew a lot after the music video for his song "Betrayed" was released in August 2017. This song became a hit, reaching number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In an interview, Leanos announced his first album would be called Total Xanarchy. It featured collaborations with famous artists like Diplo and Swae Lee. In December 2017, he announced his Total Xanarchy tour, and tickets sold out very quickly.
His first studio album, Total Xanarchy, was released on April 6, 2018. It did well commercially, reaching number ten on the Billboard 200 chart. In May 2018, he announced a mixtape called Heartbreak Soldiers, which was released on July 8, 2018.
Over the years, Leanos talked about releasing a second album many times, but these plans often changed or were delayed. Finally, in August 2024, he announced that his second album, Diego, was ready. It was released on September 6, 2024, marking his first full-length album in over six years.
Musical Style and Influences
Lil Xan has mentioned several artists who influenced his music. These include Pharrell Williams and N.E.R.D. in hip hop. He also enjoys music from bands like Arctic Monkeys, Cage the Elephant, and Queens of the Stone Age. Other musical inspirations for him are Drake and Mac Miller.
His music style has changed over time. It started with a typical "trap" sound and later moved towards a more "dream-like" and "murkier" sound. Some have described his music as part of a "sad rap" style.
Personal Life Notes
In 2018, Lil Xan was reported to have been hospitalized after eating "too many Hot Cheetos".
He collaborated with singer and actress Noah Cyrus on the song "Live or Die" in August 2018.
