Lillian Richard was an African-American actress. She was famous for playing the character of Aunt Jemima. She was born on March 23, 1891, and passed away on July 2, 1956.
About Lillian Richard
Lillian Richard was born in Hawkins, Texas, on March 23, 1891. She was one of eleven children! She grew up in a town nearby called Fouke, Texas.
In 1910, Lillian moved to Dallas, Texas. She first worked there as a cook. Around 1912, she married Golden Leflore. Sadly, he passed away about two years later.
Her Career with Quaker Oats
In 1925, the Quaker Oats Company hired Lillian. Her job was to act as the Aunt Jemima character. She would show people how to make pancakes and other products. Her work was mainly based in Paris, Texas.
Lillian married James Diggs in 1935. She worked for Quaker Oats for 23 years.
Later Life and Legacy
Around 1947 or 1948, Lillian had a stroke. She then moved back to Fouke, Texas. Her family took care of her until she passed away in 1956. She did not have any children.
In 1995, the Texas Legislature made a special declaration. They named Hawkins, Texas, the "Pancake Capital of Texas." On June 30, 2012, a Texas Historical Marker was placed in Lillian Richard's honor.
