Lillington is located right in the middle of Harnett County. A main road, U.S. Route 401, goes through the town. This road can take you north about 31 miles (50 km) to Raleigh, which is the state capital. If you go south on the same road, you'll reach Fayetteville in about 27 miles (43 km).
Another important road, U.S. Route 421, also passes through Lillington. It can take you west to Sanford (about 22 miles or 35 km away) or southeast to Dunn (about 14 miles or 23 km away).

Lillington has had a post office since 1874. The town was first called Harnett Court House. It was later named Lillington after John Alexander Lillington. He was an important officer from North Carolina during the American Revolutionary War. He fought in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge in 1776.
