Life and Career
Starting with Superstar K3
Lim Kim was born in South Korea. She moved to the United States for high school and attended Leonia High School in New Jersey. In 2011, she heard that the Korean singing competition Superstar K3 was holding auditions in New York City.
She asked a fellow student, Do Dae-yoon, who was a talented guitarist, to audition with her. They formed a duo called Togeworl. They passed the audition and flew to Seoul, South Korea, to compete on the show. The famous singer-songwriter Yoon Jong-shin became their mentor. Togeworl did very well, finishing in third place.
Becoming a Solo Artist
After the show, Lim Kim and Do Dae-yoon stayed in South Korea. They signed a contract with the music label Mystic89. While Togeworl planned to release music together, Do Dae-yoon had to return to the U.S. for school. Because of this, the label decided that Lim Kim should start as a solo singer first.
Before her official solo debut, Lim Kim appeared in the TV drama Flower Band in 2012. She sang two songs for the show's soundtrack.
In June 2013, she released her first mini-album, called A Voice. The main song, "All Right," was a huge hit. It reached number two on South Korea's Gaon singles chart. She released another mini-album, Her Voice, in September, and a full album called Goodbye 20 in November.
New Music and Style
In April 2015, Lim Kim released her third mini-album, Simple Mind. One of its songs, "Awoo," was praised by critics. Spin magazine included it on its list of the 101 Best Songs of 2015. Billboard magazine also named it one of the 20 Best K-Pop Songs of 2015.
Lim Kim left Mystic Entertainment in 2016 when her contract ended. She took a break from music for over three years.
She made a comeback in May 2019 with a new song called "Sal-ki," where she showed off her skills as a rapper. In October 2019, she released a new mini-album called Generasian. This album won Best Dance & Electronic Album at the 2020 Korean Music Awards.
In December 2021, Lim Kim signed with a new label, New Entry.
