Limehouse station is a busy train station in east London. It is located in the Limehouse area. This station is special because it serves two different types of trains. It has services for the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and for National Rail trains.
The National Rail trains at Limehouse are run by a company called c2c. These trains travel between Fenchurch Street and West Ham stations. For the DLR, Limehouse is between Shadwell and Westferry stations. Limehouse station is in Travelcard Zone 2, which helps people figure out their train fares.
Station History
Limehouse station first opened a long time ago, on 3 August 1840. It was part of an early railway line called the London and Blackwall Railway. The area around the station used to be known as Ratcliffe.
Over the years, the station changed its name a few times. It was first called Stepney, then Stepney Junction, and later Stepney East. Another station, which was also called Limehouse, used to be open nearby from 1840 to 1926. The current station was officially renamed Limehouse on 11 May 1987. The DLR platforms opened shortly after, on 31 July 1987.
Limehouse Station Today
Today, Limehouse station is located just west of the Limehouse Basin. This basin is a modern area with a marina for boats and homes. The Regent's Canal is also nearby. You can also find the northern entrance of the Rotherhithe Tunnel and the western end of the Limehouse Link tunnel close to the station.
The station has a special award called Secure Stations Scheme accreditation. This means it is recognized for being a safe place for passengers. Train operators like c2c describe Limehouse as a very busy station during rush hour. Many people change from National Rail trains to the DLR here. When it's not rush hour, it's a great place to stop. You can visit Limehouse Basin or enjoy walks along the River Thames through London's historic Docklands area.
