Limestone Creek (Chattahoochee River tributary) facts for kids
Limestone Creek is a small stream located in Georgia. It's like a smaller river that flows into a bigger one! Limestone Creek is a tributary of the famous Chattahoochee River. It's about 2.32 miles (3.73 kilometers) long.
Where Limestone Creek Flows
Limestone Creek starts in a city called Gainesville, Georgia. It begins east of Brenau University. The creek flows between two major roads: State Route 365 to the north and Interstate 985 to the south.
As it flows, the creek first heads towards the north-northwest. It crosses State Route 365. Then, it runs alongside U.S. Route 129, also known as Limestone Parkway, for a little over a mile. An unnamed smaller stream joins Limestone Creek, and soon after, the creek crosses U.S. Route 129.
After this, Limestone Creek changes direction slightly, heading north-northeast. Finally, it flows into the Chattahoochee River part of Lake Lanier. This happens just east of where U.S. Route 129 meets State Route 284 (Clarks Bridge Road).
Understanding the Watershed
Every stream and river has a watershed. Think of a watershed as a big bowl or area of land where all the rain and melting snow drain into that specific stream or river.
Limestone Creek has its own watershed, which is called the Limestone Creek-Chattahoochee River sub-watershed. This area covers about 25 square miles (about 65 square kilometers). It's located northeast of Gainesville and north of the Chattahoochee River.
This watershed includes the area right around the Chattahoochee River's branch of Lake Lanier. It stretches from where Flat Creek joins the Chattahoochee River, all the way to the southwest of where Limestone Creek starts in Gainesville. In this entire watershed, there's only one other named creek besides Limestone Creek, and that's Dog Creek, found in the northeastern part of the area.
