Limnonectes hascheanus is a type of frog that belongs to the Dicroglossidae family. These small frogs live in the Malay Peninsula. You can find them in southern Myanmar, Thailand, and Peninsular Malaysia. Scientists are still checking if they also live in the Andaman Islands.

These frogs are quite small. Male frogs are about 19–25 mm (0.75–0.98 in) long from their snout to their rear. Female frogs are a similar size, measuring about 21–25 mm (0.83–0.98 in).

About the Frog

Scientists study how different kinds of frogs are related. In 2010, two researchers, Robert F. Inger and Bryan L. Stuart, looked closely at Limnonectes hascheanus and another frog called L. limborgi. They wanted to understand these similar species better.

For a while, people thought L. limborgi was just another name for L. hascheanus. But even though they look alike, they are different species. L. hascheanus is usually smaller than L. limborgi. Also, their genes are different. This research helped scientists map out where each frog species truly lives.

Life cycle

The life cycle of Limnonectes hascheanus is interesting. Earlier, some thought these frogs had "direct development." This means the eggs would hatch directly into tiny frogs, skipping the tadpole stage.

However, later studies showed this might not be true for L. hascheanus. It seems that L. limborgi has tadpoles that swim freely. These tadpoles get their food from inside their bodies (endotrophic). It is likely that L. hascheanus also has this type of life cycle.
