Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lina Eve is an Australian artist. She is also an activist, singer, songwriter, photographer, and filmmaker.

About Lina Eve's Life and Work

Lina Eve was born in Germany. Her parents were from Poland. Her father survived the Holocaust, a very sad time in history when many Jewish people were persecuted. To escape Europe after the war, her family moved to Australia in 1951.

When Lina was 17, she had a child. Sadly, in 1964, her baby was taken away from her. This was due to a practice called forced adoption. This meant that unmarried mothers often had their babies adopted without their full consent. This difficult experience later made her a strong activist.

Her Travels and Creative Journey

Lina traveled back to Europe. She worked on a kibbutz in Israel. A kibbutz is a special community farm. She also sang folk music in London. She worked as a model in Greece and Paris. Lina was also a silversmith, making things from silver. She traveled across Europe and Asia.

Back in Australia, she continued her creative work. She was a singer, songwriter, photographer, and visual artist. She also became a filmmaker.

Her Art and Activism

Lina started painting in 1994. She studied Fine Arts at Southern Cross University in Lismore, NSW. She sold her first paintings that same year. Her art has been popular ever since, selling all over the world.

Her "Bad Girl" series of paintings, music, and videos helped her activism. She worked to change adoption laws. Her "Reclaiming my Family History" series focused on her father's experience in the Holocaust. Both series have made her well-known in Australia, the United States, and Europe.

Filmmaking Success

Lina also became a filmmaker. In 2009, she won an important award. She won the Best Australian Music Video Award at the WOW Film Festival in Sydney. This was for her music video called Bitter Wind.
