She was elected three times to the North Carolina General Assembly, which is like the state's law-making body. Linda Coleman grew up in Greenville, North Carolina. She went to public schools there. Later, she attended North Carolina A&T University. She also earned a master's degree in public administration. Starting Her Political Journey
Before she became a state representative, Linda Coleman was a Wake County Commissioner for four years. A county commissioner helps make decisions for a county, like managing local services. She also worked in human resources for state departments. This means she helped manage people who work for the state government. She was also the personnel director for the Department of Community Colleges.
In the state legislature, she represented Eastern Wake County, North Carolina. She was first elected in 2004. She was re-elected in 2006 and again in 2008. In her first term, she was chosen to lead the new members of her party in the North Carolina House.

- In 2012, she ran for Lieutenant Governor. Many people and groups supported her, including the State Employees Association of North Carolina. A newspaper called News and Observer also supported her. They said she was a good choice because she was well-qualified. She lost this election to Dan Forest.
- She ran for Lieutenant Governor again in 2016. She won the Democratic primary election on March 15, which meant she was chosen by her party to run in the main election. She won about 51 percent of the votes against three other candidates. However, she was defeated by Dan Forest again in the general election in November.
