Marta Victoria Moya Peggo Burges (born February 23, 1931 – died June 27, 2020), known as Linda Cristal, was a famous actress from Argentina. She was well-known for her roles in many Western movies during the 1950s. She even won a special award called the Golden Globe Award for her acting in the comedy film The Perfect Furlough in 1958.

Later, from 1967 to 1971, Linda Cristal played the character Victoria Cannon in the TV show The High Chaparral. Her acting in this show was so good that she won another Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama in 1970. She was also nominated for two Emmy Awards.

Early Life and Education

Linda Cristal was born in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina, on February 23, 1931. Her parents were Antonio Moya and Rosario P. Her father was a publisher, which means he owned a company that printed books and magazines. Because of some political problems, her family moved to Montevideo, Uruguay. Linda went to school at the Conservatorio Franklin in Uruguay.

Linda Cristal started her acting career in films made in Argentina and Mexico. Her first role in an English-speaking movie was as Margarita in the 1956 Western film Comanche.

After winning a Golden Globe Award for her role in The Perfect Furlough (1958), she appeared in several other movies. These included Cry Tough (1959), Legions of the Nile (1959), and The Pharaohs' Woman (1960). The famous actor John Wayne even asked her to be in his big movie The Alamo (1960). In 1961, she had an important part in the Western film Two Rode Together.

Besides her movie roles, Linda Cristal also appeared in many TV shows. She played a kidnapped Countess in an episode of Rawhide in 1959. She also played a female matador in The Tab Hunter Show. In 1964, she was in an episode of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea called "City Beneath the Sea."

In 1964, Linda Cristal took a break from acting to spend more time with her two children. However, she was convinced to return to acting for the TV series The High Chaparral (1967-1971). Her role as Victoria Cannon in this show was very popular. It earned her two more Golden Globe nominations, and she won the award for Best Actress – Television Drama in 1968. She also received two Emmy Award nominations for her work on the show.

After The High Chaparral, Linda Cristal acted less often. She had a few more roles in TV and movies, such as the film Mr. Majestyk (1974) and the TV miniseries Condominium (1980). Her last acting role was as Victoria "Rossé" Wilson in the Argentine TV series Rossé in 1985.

Personal Life

Linda Cristal was married twice. She married Robert Champion, a businessman, in 1958, but they divorced in 1959. In 1960, she married Yale Wexler, who used to be an actor and later worked in real estate. They divorced in 1966. She had two children.

Linda Cristal passed away at her home in Beverly Hills, California, on June 27, 2020, at the age of 89.
