Lindale Mall is a popular enclosed shopping mall located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, United States. It's a big place where people can shop, eat, and spend time.

The main store at Lindale Mall is Von Maur. You can also find other businesses outside the main mall building, like a Hy-Vee supermarket and a Jo-Ann craft store. There are many restaurants too, including Arby's, Five Guys Burgers, Cheddars, Hurricane Bar and Grill, Panda Express, Red Lobster, and Chick-fil-A.

Mall History

How Lindale Mall Started

Back on February 15, 1956, two big stores, Sears and Younkers, announced plans for a new shopping area. This new place would be in northeast Cedar Rapids. At first, it was planned to be an open-air shopping center.

However, some business owners from downtown Cedar Rapids didn't like this idea. They thought it would hurt their businesses. So, they formed a group to stop the land from being changed for commercial use. Even with their protests, the city council eventually approved the plans.

Lindale Plaza officially opened its doors on September 15, 1960. The first main stores were Sears, Younkers, and Killian's. Sears even moved its store from downtown Cedar Rapids to this new location. Other early shops included Kresge's, an Eagle supermarket, and Bishop's Buffet. Interestingly, Sears and Younkers were the only two stores that stayed open at Lindale from the very beginning.

Becoming an Enclosed Mall

In 1980, Lindale Plaza changed into the enclosed Lindale Mall. This happened shortly after another mall, Westdale Mall, opened in southwest Cedar Rapids.

The first big change to the main stores happened in 1981. Petersen Harned Von Maur took over the spot where Killian's used to be. Killian's had gone out of business.

In August 1997, Lindale Mall completed a big improvement project. They spent $15 million to make the mall better and bigger. This included building a new parking ramp with space for 500 cars. They also added a new food court with 500 seats where people could eat.

Mall Ownership Changes

Lindale Plaza was first built by a company called Bernard Greenbaum and Associates. This company also built another well-known mall in Iowa, Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines.

Later, Bernard Greenbaum sold Lindale to General Growth Properties. This company also owned Town & Country Shopping Center, which was Cedar Rapids' first strip mall. General Growth Properties sold Lindale Mall in 1984. However, they continued to manage the mall until 1998.

In March 1998, a new partnership bought Lindale Mall. This partnership was called SDG Macerich, and it was made up of the Simon Property Group and The Macerich Company.

Then, in May 2014, Simon Property Group created a new company called Washington Prime Group. Lindale Mall became part of this new company. Washington Prime Group still owns and manages Lindale Mall today.

Recent Changes to Stores

In 2015, the company that owned Sears, Sears Holdings, made some changes. They created a new company called Seritage Growth Properties. The Sears store at Lindale Mall became part of this new company.

On April 12, 2018, Sears announced that its Lindale Mall location would close in July. Just a few days later, on April 18, 2018, it was announced that Younkers would also close. Their parent company was going out of business. The Younkers store closed on August 31, 2018.

With both Sears and Younkers closing, Von Maur became the only remaining main store at Lindale Mall. Part of the old Sears building is expected to become a Planet Fitness gym.
