Station History

The first Linden station opened in 1912. A year later, in 1913, a special building for the station was designed by Arthur Gerber. This old station building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This list keeps track of important historical places.

A brand new station was built nearby between 1991 and 1993. The original station building is now used for shops.

Where is Linden Station?

The Linden station is located at 349 Linden Avenue in Wilmette, Illinois. It is the northernmost 'L' station in the entire CTA system. It's also the only station on the Purple Line that is at ground level. The train line goes underground shortly after crossing the North Shore Channel and entering Wilmette.

The older station building, called the Linden Avenue Terminal, is still there. It is recognized as a historic place. The station is just a few blocks west of the Baháʼí House of Worship, which is a beautiful temple. It's also about a mile east of Metra's Wilmette train station.
