Lindley Creek facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lindley Creek is a cool stream located in Dallas, Hickory, and Polk counties in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's like a smaller river that flows into a bigger one called the Pomme de Terre River.

Lindley Creek: A Missouri Stream

Lindley Creek is an important waterway in central Missouri. It helps carry water across the land and eventually joins a larger river system. Understanding streams like Lindley Creek helps us learn about the natural flow of water in our environment.

Where Does Lindley Creek Start?

Every stream has a beginning, and Lindley Creek starts in eastern Polk County. Its journey begins on the eastern side of a place called Blue Mound. This starting point, known as the headwaters, is quite high up, at about 1,220 feet above sea level. Think of it as the very top of a slide where the water first starts to flow!

Lindley Creek's Journey

From its high starting point, Lindley Creek generally flows north. It passes under Missouri Route 32, which is a road about two miles west of the town of Buffalo.

After flowing north for about four miles, the stream takes a turn to the west. It then enters Polk County again. The creek continues its path, flowing northwest for a bit, then turning north once more. You can see it pass under Missouri Route 64 just east of a spot called Mohawk Corner.

Finally, Lindley Creek enters Hickory County. Here, its journey ends as it flows into the waters of Pomme de Terre Lake. This lake was formed by damming the Pomme de Terre River. Before the lake was created, Lindley Creek used to join the Pomme de Terre River directly at a spot about 760 feet above sea level.

How Lindley Creek Got Its Name

Lindley Creek is named after an early pioneer who explored the area. A pioneer was someone who was among the first to settle and explore a new region. This particular pioneer, a Mr. Lindley, faced some really bad weather. He got stuck and had to spend the entire winter in the area near the creek. Because of his unexpected stay, the creek was named in his honor!
