Awards Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography

Linnie Marsh Wolfe (born January 8, 1881 – died September 15, 1945) was an American librarian and writer. She won a famous award called the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography in 1946. She earned this award for her book about the famous naturalist John Muir, which was called Son of the Wilderness: The Life of John Muir.

About Linnie Marsh Wolfe

Linnie Marsh was born in Big Rapids, Michigan. She went to several colleges, including Whitman College and Radcliffe College. She also studied at the University of Southern California to become a librarian. She even took classes at the University of Washington and the University of California.

Linnie worked as a teacher in Washington. Later, she became a librarian in public libraries and high schools in Los Angeles, California. In 1924, she married Roy Wolfe. They did not have any children.

Her Work with John Muir

While working as a librarian, Linnie became very interested in the writings of John Muir. Muir was a famous naturalist and explorer. He helped protect many wild places in America.

Linnie loved Muir's work so much that she organized trips for schoolchildren to visit his home. She also talked about him on the radio. She even became the secretary for the John Muir Association. This group helps keep Muir's memory and ideas alive.

Writing About John Muir

John Muir kept many journals throughout his life. Some of these journals had already been published. But Linnie was asked to work on Muir's journals and notes that had never been shared before.

She finished this big project, and the book was called John of the Mountains: The Unpublished Journals of John Muir. It was published in 1938. After this, a publisher named Alfred A. Knopf, Sr. asked her to write a full book about Muir's life.

Linnie worked very hard on this new book. She talked to Muir's daughters and other family members. She also spoke with people who knew him well. Her book, Son of the Wilderness: The Life of John Muir, came out in May 1945. This book is still important today. Rangers and volunteers at the John Muir National Historic Site are required to read it.

Pulitzer Prize Winner

Linnie Marsh Wolfe passed away in Berkeley, California, on September 15, 1945. She died before she could receive her Pulitzer Prize. The award was given in May 1946, after her death.
