Linwood's Story: A Look Back in Time
Linwood is one of Christchurch's older suburbs. It was first set up in 1850. The name "Linwood" came from Joseph Brittan. He bought a large piece of land here. He named his farm "Linwood" because he was from a place called Linwood in Hampshire, England. Joseph Brittan built a house called Linwood House in 1857. This house stood for many years until it was taken down after the big 2011 Christchurch earthquake in February 2011.
Long ago, Christchurch didn't have an easy way to reach the sea for ships. This was a big problem for the new city. Before the Lyttelton Rail Tunnel was built in 1867, people thought about using barges along what is now Linwood Avenue. But this idea was never finished.
In 2019, a very sad event happened at the Linwood Islamic Centre.
