Lionel Boyle, the 3rd Earl of Orrery (born July 11, 1671 – died August 24, 1703), was an important politician from both Ireland and England. For a few years, between 1679 and 1682, he was known as Lord Broghill.

Early Life and Family

Lionel Boyle was born in 1671. His father was Roger Boyle, 2nd Earl of Orrery. His mother was Mary, who was the daughter of Richard Sackville, 5th Earl of Dorset.

Lionel went to college at the University of Utrecht. This was a well-known university in the Netherlands.

When his father passed away in 1682, Lionel became the 3rd Earl of Orrery. This was a special title in Ireland.

A Career in Politics

Even though Lionel had an Irish title, it did not give him a seat in the English House of Lords. The House of Lords is part of the British Parliament.

Instead, Lionel Boyle became a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the government. He represented the area of East Grinstead.

He served as an MP during these times:

  • From February to November in 1695.
  • From 1698 to January in 1701.
  • Again from November 1701 to 1702.

Family and Later Life

Lord Orrery married his cousin, Mary. She was the daughter of Charles Sackville, 6th Earl of Dorset.

Lionel Boyle passed away in August 1703. He was 32 years old. He died in Earl's Court, Kensington, London.

After his death, his younger brother, Charles, became the 4th Earl of Orrery. Lionel's wife, Mary, later married Richard Boyle, 2nd Viscount Shannon. She passed away in June 1714.
