Lionel Chalmers Jr. was born on November 10, 1980. He is an American who used to play professional basketball. Lionel is 6 feet tall and played as a point guard on the court. He now works as an assistant coach for the Orlando Magic in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Lionel Chalmers' Early Basketball Days
Lionel Chalmers started playing high school basketball in Schenectady, New York. He played for three years at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons. For his last year of high school, he moved to Albany High School.
After high school, Lionel went to Xavier University. He played college basketball there for four years. In his senior year, he helped lead the Xavier team to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament. This is a very important part of the college basketball championships. In 2015, he was honored by being added to the Xavier University Athletic Hall of Fame.
Lionel Chalmers' Pro Basketball Journey
Lionel Chalmers was chosen by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2004 NBA draft. He was the 33rd player picked overall. During the 2004–05 season, he played in 34 games for the Clippers. He scored about 3.1 points and made 1.4 assists per game.
In August 2005, Lionel was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He played for them during the preseason games in 2005. However, he became a free agent before the regular season started.
After leaving the NBA, Lionel played basketball in other countries. From November 2005 to February 2006, he played in Greece for AEK Athens BC. Then he joined TAU Cerámica in Spain.
In the summer of 2006, he played with the Phoenix Suns' summer league team. He also played for the Atlanta Hawks during their preseason. After the Hawks released him, Lionel signed with Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari in Italy in December 2006. In May 2007, he moved back to Spain to play for Basket CAI Zaragoza.
In July 2007, Lionel joined Benetton Treviso in Italy. After one season there, he signed with a Russian team called Universitet Yugra Surgut. He had a great season in Russia, becoming the top scorer in the Russian Basketball Super League. He scored 21.4 points per game! For the 2009–10 season, he played for another Russian team, Enisey Krasnoyarsk. In July 2010, he signed with BC Lokomotiv Kuban.
In 2012, Lionel moved to Turkey to play for Aliağa Petkim. In October 2013, he signed a one-year deal with Levski Sofia in Bulgaria. With this team, he helped them win the National Basketball League championship in Bulgaria.
In July 2014, he signed with Chalons-Reims in France. He left that team on January 9, 2015.
Becoming a Coach
Lionel Chalmers started his coaching career in 2017. He began as a video coordinator for the Orlando Magic. Two years later, he became an associate coach focusing on player development. On August 8, 2021, he became a full-time assistant coach with the Orlando Magic.
About Lionel's Family
Lionel Chalmers has a cousin named Mario Chalmers. Mario also played professional basketball. He was picked in the 2008 NBA draft and later played for the Miami Heat. Mario won two NBA championships with the Heat. Lionel is married and has three children.
