Lionel Chalmers Jr. (born November 10, 1980) is an American former professional basketball player. He currently works as an assistant coach for the Orlando Magic team in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is 6 feet (1.83 meters) tall and played as a point guard on the court.

Playing in School and College
Lionel Chalmers started his high school basketball journey at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons in Schenectady, New York. For his final year of high school, he moved to Albany High School.
After high school, Chalmers went to Xavier University. He played college basketball there for four years. In his senior year, he helped lead the Xavier team to the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. This is a big achievement in college basketball. In 2015, he was honored by being added to the Xavier University Athletic Hall of Fame.
Professional Basketball Career
Starting in the NBA
In 2004, Lionel Chalmers was chosen by the Los Angeles Clippers in the NBA draft. He was the 33rd player picked overall. During the 2004–05 season, he played in 34 games for the Clippers. He scored about 3.1 points and made 1.4 assists per game.
In August 2005, he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He played for them during the preseason but was released before the regular season began.
Playing Overseas
After his time in the NBA, Chalmers played basketball in many different countries.
- He played in Greece for AEK Athens BC from November 2005 to February 2006.
- Then he joined TAU Cerámica in Spain.
- In 2006, he played for the Phoenix Suns and Atlanta Hawks in the summer and preseason, but he didn't stay with either team.
- He then signed with Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari in Italy in December 2006.
- In May 2007, he moved to another Spanish team, Basket CAI Zaragoza.
- In July 2007, Chalmers went back to Italy to play for Benetton Treviso.
- After a season in Italy, he signed with a Russian club called Universitet Yugra Surgut. He was the top scorer in the Russian Basketball Super League that season, averaging 21.4 points per game.
- For the 2009–10 season, he played for another Russian team, Enisey Krasnoyarsk.
- In July 2010, he joined BC Lokomotiv Kuban.
- In 2012, he moved to Turkey to play for Aliağa Petkim.
- In October 2013, he signed a one-year deal with Levski Sofia in Bulgaria. With this team, he won the National Basketball League championship in Bulgaria.
- In July 2014, he signed with Chalons-Reims in France. He left the team in January 2015.
Coaching Career
Lionel Chalmers started his coaching journey in 2017. He began as a video coordinator for the Orlando Magic. Two years later, he became an associate coach, helping players develop their skills. On August 8, 2021, he became a full-time assistant coach with the Magic.
Family Life
Lionel Chalmers has a cousin named Mario Chalmers. Mario also played basketball and was drafted into the NBA in 2008. Mario played for the Miami Heat and won two NBA championships with them. Lionel Chalmers is married and has three children.
