His ideas also helped shape how India was governed and influenced the creation of the Commonwealth of Nations.

Who Was Lionel Curtis?

Early Life and Education

Lionel Curtis was born in 1872 in Coddington, Herefordshire, England. He was the youngest of four children. His father, George James Curtis, was a church leader.

Working for a United South Africa

Curtis fought in the Second Boer War, a conflict in South Africa. After the war, he worked as a secretary for Lord Milner. During this time, he focused on helping to create a united and self-governing South Africa.

After Lord Milner passed away in 1925, Lionel Curtis became the leader of a group called Milner's Kindergarten. This was a group of talented young officials who helped rebuild South Africa.

Ideas for Global Unity

His experiences in South Africa led him to develop his ideas about a Federal World Government. This became his main goal in life.

The Round Table Journal

To share his ideas, Curtis started a quarterly magazine called Round Table in 1910. He also became a lecturer at the University of Oxford in 1912, teaching about the history of colonies. He was also made a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford.

Helping Shape International Relations

In 1919, Curtis led a group of British and American experts. Their job was to set up the Royal Institute of International Affairs during the Peace Conference of Paris. This organization, also known as Chatham House, studies world affairs and helps people understand international issues.
