Her Education and Early Work
Lisa Marcaurelle earned her first degree in chemistry from the College of the Holy Cross in 1997. She was a very bright student and was part of a special honor society called Phi Beta Kappa. While in college, she worked with a professor named Timothy Curran, studying small protein parts.
Later, she went to the University of California, Berkeley, to get her Ph.D. in Chemistry. Her advisor was Carolyn Bertozzi, a famous scientist. Lisa worked on new ways to connect sugar molecules to proteins. This helped her create copies of natural substances like mucin, which are important in our bodies. After her Ph.D., she spent a year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. There, she worked with Peter Seeberger on making complex sugar chains in a special way.
Her Exciting Career in Science
Lisa Marcaurelle worked at two important places, Infinity Pharmaceuticals and the Broad Institute, for a total of nine years. She focused on finding new chemicals quickly and creating different types of molecules. Her work helped in understanding biology and making new medicines.
In 2011, she became a vice president at H3 Biomedicine. At H3, she built a special system to create many different kinds of chemicals. She worked with new types of molecules, including spirocycles and macrocycles. These are complex ring-shaped molecules.
Later, in 2016, she became a Senior Director of Chemistry at Warp Drive Bio. In 2018, she took on a new role as Vice President at Enko Chem. This company is a start-up that works on protecting crops. Also in 2018, she became a senior director at GlaxoSmithKline in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There, she led a team that used special DNA technology to find new chemicals.
Lisa Marcaurelle also helps other scientists. She volunteers for professional groups and guides younger scientists in the medicine industry. She strongly supports women scientists getting leadership roles.
